"Otherness", the search for a better world and community – these are the themes of this year's summer project "Between Blocks". Around 100 children and young people from the Musaik Orchestra will explore local stories, celebrate cultural diversity and express the unique characteristics of our neighbourhood – Dresden-Prohlis – through music. Cooperation partners are the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and the Prohlis youth centre (Jugendhaus Prohlis) for creative and media education.

The musical basis is the West Side Story, one of the most famous musical theatre works of the 20th century by the American composer Leonard Bernstein. From inspiring melodies to rousing rhythms, the final concert on Saturday, 15 June 2024 at 5 p.m. in the gym of the 121st secondary school in Prohlis will be a sonic journey through our streets, squares and hearts.

The children and young people will also be active in terms of content: they will address their visions of the future and dreams (e.g. of a peaceful society in Prohlis) and translate them into the imaginative world of West Side Story. The audience thus becomes part of a journey through the life situations of the children of the Musaik Orchestra itself: between the prefabricated buildings – Between Blocks.
